Warning: Cheap online tanning pills pose potential health risks

Tanning pills that are being sold online for as little as £7 have been deemed ineffective and potentially dangerous by experts. These pills contain pigments such as beta-carotene and canthaxanthin, which are advertised on platforms like Amazon and Etsy. The additives in these pills are deposited throughout the body, especially in the skin, resulting in an orange-like color. While not illegal, high doses of these additives can lead to liver problems and an increased risk of lung cancer. One UK-based Etsy seller was found advertising packs of 120 Beta Carotene 8mg tablets for £6.99. The tablets were marketed as “immune support tanning tablets” that were vegan and offered vitamin A for various health benefits. Another seller on Amazon promoted 120 “British made” vegan tablets that contained beta carotene, vitamin B3, zinc, copper, vitamin B2, and iodine. These tablets, priced at £13.59, promised a “natural and safe tanning process.” However, experts warn that these unregulated products may contain other undisclosed ingredients. Both Amazon and Etsy are investigating the highlighted products and are taking steps to remove them from their platforms. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) stated that any product classified as a medicine must be authorized for legal sale and supply in the UK. Tanning pills are prohibited by these platforms, and the MHRA will take regulatory action against any tanning products that fall under the definition of a medicine. It is important to note that the safety and effectiveness of tanning pills are questionable, and experts recommend using alternative methods like fake tan lotions over these potentially harmful supplements.
