‘Friends’ Considered Replacing Important Character Due to Poor Chemistry

In the memoir “Directed By James Burrows,” renowned director James Burrows delves into the behind-the-scenes secrets of the beloved sitcom “Friends.” One notable revelation involves the casting of Ross Geller’s wife, Emily, and the challenges faced due to the lack of chemistry between actors Helen Baxendale (Emily) and David Schwimmer (Ross).

According to Burrows, Baxendale was nice but not particularly funny, which posed a problem for the show. Chemistry, like that between Ross and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), is crucial in sitcoms and romantic comedies. Schwimmer had no one to bounce off, making the dynamic between Ross and Emily like clapping with one hand.

Burrows, now 82 years old, emphasized the importance of finding an actress who could bring both humor and chemistry to the role. Unfortunately, recasting Emily was not a viable option due to the show’s tight schedule and logistical constraints.

The director acknowledged that in some cases, when chemistry is lacking, it becomes necessary to replace an actor. However, when chemistry does exist, the writers work to find ways to keep the actor on board. Baxendale appeared in a total of 14 episodes, debuting in season four and culminating in Ross and Emily’s wedding in season five.

Fans of the show will recall the infamous moment when Ross accidentally said Rachel’s name during his wedding vows to Emily. Eventually, Ross and Rachel rekindled their romance. During the recent “Friends” reunion special in 2021, Schwimmer and Aniston reflected on their onscreen relationship, revealing their mutual attraction at the time. However, they respected the fact that one of them was always in a relationship, thereby maintaining boundaries.

Aniston also shared an anecdote about the anticipation of their first onscreen kiss, expressing her relief that it didn’t happen on national television. Janelle Ash, an entertainment writer for Fox News Digital, reported on these revelations from the memoir.
