According to Dr. Michael Moseley, cans of fatty fish such as sardines, mackerel, and anchovies provide a significant boost to brain health due to their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. “Omega-3 is a vital fatty acid that your body cannot produce, so the only way to ensure you get enough is through your diet,” Moseley explains. For those who prefer to avoid fish altogether, Dr. Moseley suggests incorporating seaweed into the diet. He claims that seaweed has been a vital source of omega-3 for our ancestors throughout history. Other sources of omega-3 include flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, olives, and eggs.

Although omega-3 supplements have gained popularity, recent doubts have emerged about their efficacy. A study by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center revealed that the health claims made on fish oil supplement labels are often not supported by any research. “The prevalence of health claims on fish oil supplements did not surprise me, based on what I have personally seen in grocery stores and pharmacies,” says study co-author Joanna Assadourian.
