Russian Attacks in Ukraine Result in 3 Fatalities and 17 Injuries

Ukrainian officials reported additional civilian casualties resulting from Russian shelling in the eastern and southern parts of the country on Saturday morning. This coincided with the visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Kyiv, demonstrating ongoing support from Madrid and the European Union for Ukraine’s efforts to repel the invading Russian forces.

In a speech to Ukraine’s parliament, Sánchez received multiple standing ovations and declared, “We will stand by you for as long as it takes.”

“I am here to express the unwavering determination of the European Union and Europe as a whole against the illegal and unjustified aggression of Russia towards Ukraine,” he stated on the day that Spain assumed the rotating presidency of the 27-nation EU.

Sánchez will hold a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, followed by a joint press conference on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, regional officials in Ukraine reported that at least three civilians were killed and 17 others wounded due to Russian shelling on Friday and throughout the night. Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko revealed that three people died and ten more were injured on Friday in the front-line eastern Donetsk region, where fierce battles are ongoing.

The Ukrainian General Staff reported ongoing intense clashes in three areas of Donetsk, where Russia has concentrated troops and attempted to advance. In their latest social media updates, the General Staff identified the outskirts of Bakhmut, Lyman, and Marinka as hotspots, stating that Russia’s assault attempts there had been unsuccessful.

On Friday and overnight, five people, including a child, were wounded in the south’s Kherson region. Governor Oleksandr Prokudin confirmed that Russian forces had carried out 82 artillery, drone, mortar shell, and rocket attacks on the province. This region is divided by a 1,500-kilometer (930 mile) front line and is currently dealing with flooding caused by the recent collapse of a major dam on the Dnipro River.

In the northeastern Kharkiv region, Russian shelling injured a 57-year-old civilian man, according to local Governor Oleh Syniehubov. Furthermore, in the western Sumy region, a teenage boy was wounded by a strike from across the Russian border, as reported by the local military administration.

Discussing potential peace talks, the Spanish Prime Minister emphasized that “only Ukraine can dictate the terms and timeline for negotiations. While other countries and regions have proposed peace plans, we appreciate their involvement, but we cannot fully accept them. This is a war of aggression, with an aggressor and a victim. They cannot be treated equally, and we must not reward disregard for the rules. Hence, we support President Zelensky’s peace formula,” added Sánchez.
