New study declares Barcelona, Toronto, and Beijing as the top cities for ‘workcations’

The concept of working while traveling has become increasingly popular with the rise of remote and hybrid work. If you’re considering a “workcation,” Barcelona might just be the perfect destination for you.

According to IWG, a flexible workplace company, Barcelona ranked at the top among 26 cities worldwide in terms of its suitability for work and leisure. IWG graded these cities on a scale of 1 to 10, taking into account factors such as climate, culture, accommodation, transport, food and drink, happiness, broadband speed, and availability of flexible workspace.

“The chosen categories were carefully selected to create an optimal environment for working abroad, considering both basic livability requirements and factors that can impact productivity, such as broadband speed and the availability of flexible workspaces,” explained Darren Rogers, the Country Manager for IWG Singapore.

Barcelona, known for its vibrant cultural scene and almost year-round sunshine, offers the ideal blend of work and leisure for those looking to work remotely. Its unique combination of sun, sea, sand, and cosmopolitan atmosphere adds to its allure.

To gather insights into this trend, IWG conducted a survey among over 1,000 hybrid workers. The survey revealed that nearly 57% of respondents had taken workcations in the past year, where they extended their holidays by working from abroad. This demonstrates the increasing desire of today’s workers to explore beyond their home countries and enjoy the flexibility of combining work and travel.

When it comes to remote work, broadband speed emerged as the top priority for digital nomads, surpassing factors like cost of living and weather. Cloud technology enables workers to be productive from anywhere, making a reliable and high-quality internet connection crucial.

Singapore ranked highest for broadband speed, followed by New York and Hong Kong. Although Singapore is ranked 21st on the overall list, it excels in categories such as happiness and transport. Being Asia’s top financial hub, Singapore also boasts the world’s best airport, serving as a convenient gateway to the rest of Asia.

Along with Barcelona, Toronto secured a top spot on the list of cities for workcations. Toronto offers excellent broadband speed and affordable accommodation, while also scoring high in categories like happiness and the availability of flexible workspaces. The city provides a diverse experience with its abundance of green spaces amidst the bustling urban setting.

Here are the top 10 cities for workcations:
1. Barcelona
2. Toronto
3. Beijing
4. Milan
5. New York
6. Rio De Janeiro
7. Amsterdam
8. Paris
9. Jakarta
10. Lisbon

Barcelona’s attraction extends beyond work opportunities. The city also offers a relatively low cost of living compared to other popular European cities. Additionally, the cost of transport in Barcelona is affordable, and a cup of coffee typically costs $2.68, in contrast to higher prices in cities like Los Angeles and Beijing.

Last year, Spain and Canada introduced digital nomad programs, appealing to professionals who have the flexibility to work remotely. These programs allow individuals to explore new countries and cultures while maintaining their work commitments.

The third-ranked city for workcations is Beijing, which excels in categories such as culture, accommodation, and transport costs. With a total of 1,484 galleries and museums, Beijing offers a rich cultural experience. Rent in the city averages $1,204 per month.

Overall, the trend of workcations reflects the evolving desires and needs of today’s workers. The freedom to work remotely has opened doors to new opportunities for exploration and productivity. As the world continues to adapt to remote and hybrid work models, the trend of working while traveling is likely to continue its upward trajectory.
