Miley Cyrus Gets Emotional as She Reveals Her and Dad Billy Ray Cyrus’ Perspective on Fame

Miley Cyrus discusses the contrasting relationships she and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, have with fame and success.

In her TikTok series inspired by her new single “Used to be Young,” the former “Hannah Montana” star opens up in one video about their perspectives on celebrity status.

“When I was born, my dad had the No. 1 country song,” recalls Miley Cyrus, referring to her father’s breakout single “Achy Breaky Heart” released in 1992. “When I see the numbers, I see the human beings behind it enjoying the music, and I value people over numbers.”

Miley Cyrus emphasizes that fame carries more significance for her father due to his upbringing.

“My dad had a completely different upbringing than me,” she explains. “So our perspectives on fame and success are vastly different. The emotional impact he feels from being loved by a large audience is far greater than anything I could experience. For him, it’s like healing a childhood wound. And I’ve always been treated as a star.”

“It brings me to tears,” Miley Cyrus adds, getting emotional. “That’s the difference.”

Billy Ray Cyrus discussed his childhood in a 2011 GQ profile. He grew up in Kentucky in the 1960s as a child of divorce, with a father in a gospel band who tragically passed away from mesothelioma after working in a steel mill. He also felt stigmatized at school due to having half- and step-siblings.

“I always felt like an outsider,” he shared with the magazine.

Originally aspiring to become a catcher for the Cincinnati Reds, Billy Ray Cyrus had a spiritual awakening at a Neil Diamond concert, where he felt God leading him to buy a guitar. He struggled for ten years in Nashville and nearly gave up on music until “Achy Breaky Heart” became a huge success.

Miley Cyrus expresses her admiration for her father’s talent in her TikTok series, sharing an old video of him playing the guitar and singing to her when she was a child.

“I believe my dad’s vocal abilities were underappreciated,” Miley Cyrus acknowledges, giving him credit for teaching her how to use her voice.

“I have countless wonderful memories of singing music with my dad,” she adds. “I learned so much and absorbed everything. I can see my own growth as I watch him sing and witness his mastery of the instrument.”
