National: Canadian and French military aircraft ‘collide’ at Guam air base

An international investigation is currently underway following a collision between a Canadian military aircraft and a French air force plane at a U.S. air base in Guam. The incident occurred on Friday at Anderson Air Force Base, where the two aircraft came into contact with each other. The involved planes were a Canadian CC-150 Polaris military transport plane and a French Air and Space Force A400M, both of which are used for military transport purposes. Fortunately, there were no individuals on board the Canadian aircraft at the time, and there have been no reported casualties.

The Canadian, French, and U.S. air forces are currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause and extent of the damage to the aircraft. The Department of National Defence spokesperson, Daniel Le Bouthillier, stated that the flight safety investigation process is ongoing, and no conclusions can be drawn regarding the potential cause of the incident at this time. Global News has reached out to the French Ministry of Defence for additional information.

The Pentagon has referred inquiries about the incident to Anderson Air Force Base, but their press office has not yet responded to requests for comment. It is worth noting that this is not the first time a Canadian plane has been involved in an incident at an air base. In 2019, another CC-150 Polaris aircraft collided with an aircraft hangar in Trenton, Ont. while being towed. The aircraft sustained significant damage and was grounded for several months for repairs.

Canada currently operates five Polaris aircraft for military, medical, and diplomatic transport purposes. The government is in the process of replacing this fleet with newer-model aircraft, having already purchased two Airbus A330-200 planes. These replacements are expected to arrive in Canada by the end of the year. The Department of National Defence plans to procure a total of six newer military transport aircraft for the new fleet.

The Polaris aircraft involved in the incident at Anderson Air Force Base had been in Guam to transport Canadian military members who participated in the U.S. Air Force’s Exercise Mobility Guardian. This exercise, described as the Air Mobility Command’s largest and most challenging in years, aims to enhance combat readiness and wartime preparedness in the Indo-Pacific region. As part of Canada’s larger Indo-Pacific strategy, the country has committed to increasing its military presence in the region.
