July 13 (UPI) — During his sexual misconduct trial at London’s Southwark Crown Court on Thursday, renowned actor Kevin Spacey described himself as “a big flirt” and admitted to “touching” one of his accusers in a “romantic” manner.
Spacey, an Academy Award-winner, personally testified in defense against the 12 counts of sexual misconduct brought by four men, potentially resulting in several decades of imprisonment. The incidents in question span as far back as 2001.
Regarding an encounter with one accuser, Spacey claimed he never touched the man aggressively or violently, portraying the man as flirtatious during their initial meeting. “We had a very fun time together,” Spacey shared with the court. He also mentioned that he respected the accuser’s decision to not pursue any further involvement. The accuser, however, has alleged multiple instances of sexual assault by Spacey over the years.
When questioned by his attorney, Spacey expressed his shock at the allegations of sexual misconduct. “I was crushed,” Spacey said about the allegations. “I never thought the [complainant] I knew over 20 years later would stab me in the back.”
Spacey emphasized that his relationship with the witness was gentle and non-aggressive. “It was touching and, in my mind, romantic,” Spacey explained. “It was not what he has described. The more time we spent with each other, the more comfortable we became.”
The fate of Kevin Spacey lies in the hands of the nine men and three women comprising the jury. The charges against him involve four men and include seven counts of sexual assault, three counts of indecent assault, one count of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.
