Aug. 28 (UPI) — In a remarkable accomplishment, Eni announced the commencement of production in the Baleine oil and gas field situated off the Ivory Coast. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the fact that it was accomplished in less than two years since the initial discovery.

The Baleine field, which is the largest of its kind off the Ivorian coast, will gradually begin output through an offshore production vessel. The initial production rates will be 15,000 barrels of oil and 25 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day.

At its peak, the Baleine field is projected to produce 150,000 barrels of oil and 200 million cubic feet of natural gas per day. To put this into perspective, the peak oil production is equivalent to the inland Appalachia basin in the United States, which is the second-lowest oil producer. However, natural gas production will be relatively minimal compared to that of the United States.

Despite this, West Africa has emerged as a thriving producer in the energy sector since the 2010s. Eni also disclosed that all of the gas extracted from the field will be transported onshore through a new pipeline, contributing to meeting Ivory Coast’s domestic electricity requirements.

Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi expressed his satisfaction with the remarkable achievement, stating, “Stemming from an extraordinary exploration success, we have achieved an industry-leading time-to-market of under two years from the declaration of commercial discovery.”

The start of production comes less than a year and a half after the final investment decision was made. This is a significant accomplishment considering the political conflicts Ivory Coast has been facing, including territorial disputes over maritime boundaries with neighboring countries.
