NEW YORK, Aug. 28 (UPI) — Adrian Scarborough, known for his roles in “A Very English Scandal” and “Killing Eve,” discusses the unique light-hearted tone of his Acorn TV series “The Chelsea Detective,” which sets it apart from other serious cop dramas.

“In this kind of environment, you need to have a sense of humor because without it, you’d quickly go down. You have to be able to crack a joke or find humor in certain situations,” Scarborough told UPI in a recent phone interview.

“In Season 1, we discovered a color that we really liked and believed the audience would enjoy. We didn’t want it to be consistently grim,” he explained. “We were very aware of that and had a great time exploring it.”

The second season, premiering on Monday, follows Detective Inspector Max Arnold (played by Scarborough) who is still estranged from his wife and lives on a houseboat. However, this time he is paired with a new partner, Detective Sgt. Layla Walsh, portrayed by Vanessa Emme.

“Vanessa and I share great chemistry. It feels very natural, not forced at all,” Scarborough said of working with Emme. “She brings a lot of fun to the set. Even when we’re tired, she remains upbeat, positive, and has a twinkle in her eye. I think that translates on screen.”

While Max tends to be reserved in his opinions about people, Scarborough mentioned that “Layla knows he respects her enormously.”

This season, the crime-fighting duo tackles a variety of mysteries that explore different socio-economic levels in the iconic neighborhood of Chelsea, London.

“All of our storylines are resolved within each episode, which allows us a lot of freedom to go anywhere and do anything. I especially like showcasing Chelsea’s darker side,” Scarborough shared.

The plots include an art heist gone wrong, a gruesome murder at a high-end retirement home, and a vegetable delivery company that isn’t what it seems.

Outside of work, Max’s personal life is less eventful as he reluctantly comes to terms with his single status.

“He still deeply misses his wife and wishes their breakup could have been simpler, hoping for everyone to be happy again. But, that’s not the emotional reality he lives in,” Scarborough explained. “He’s not well-versed in long-term relationships. However, they still get along.”

Max also enjoys the freedom and flexibility of living on his houseboat, allowing him to focus on his cases, which potentially contributed to the downfall of his marriage.

Through his role in the show, Scarborough gained insight into the challenges real police officers face when it comes to balancing personal and professional lives.

He emphasized the importance of clearing one’s mind in order to have emotionally fulfilling relationships and effectively handle work-related issues, regardless of one’s profession.

“Some of the greatest moments of clarity come when you’re not actively engrossed in your work,” Scarborough, who is also a writer, noted. “Many good things in my life and career have come to me when I’m not actively pursuing them. Sometimes, while walking my dog, I’ll have a fantastic idea for a piece of writing, a character, or a play.”

The cast and crew felt more relaxed returning for the second season since the characters and setting had already been established in the first season.

“One of the joys of receiving a second season is that everyone feels much more comfortable and confident in their roles,” Scarborough said. “The writers are more confident in who they are writing for because we’ve already tested it out. Everyone feels that the audience has given it a thumbs up.”
