Iranian opposition representatives demonstrated against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence in January. On Monday, Canada imposed another round of sanctions against Iran, marking the 12th round since October. These sanctions follow a series of measures taken by Canada to address human rights violations in Iran. The latest package targets seven individuals in the Iranian court system, six of whom are members of the Revolutionary Court, known for its harsh treatment of human rights protesters. The sanctioned individuals include judges Morteza Barati, Hadi Mansouri, Musa Asif Al Hosseini, Seyed Mahmoud Sadati, Heidar Asiyabi, and criminal court advisory judge Mehrdad Tahamtan, as well as supreme court judge Mohammad Moghiseh. These individuals will face restrictions on any dealings in Canada and will not have access to their assets held in the country. The Revolutionary Court system in Iran has faced criticism for its oppressive actions and has even imposed death sentences. In response to these violations, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melanie Joly, expressed support for the Iranian people and emphasized that Canada will continue to use all available means to address Iran’s actions. It is important to note that Canada firmly opposes the death penalty in all cases. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada’s decision to impose sanctions against Iran in September, following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died while in police custody for violating Iran’s strict hijab laws. This incident sparked widespread protests and condemnation. In total, Canada has sanctioned 163 individuals and 192 organizations in Iran, including security officials.
