Meeting Between Biden and AI Experts to Discuss Risk Management

In a bid to address the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI), President Biden is set to meet with prominent AI experts and researchers in San Francisco. This meeting aims to bring together professionals such as Jim Steyer, the CEO of Common Sense Media, Tristan Harris, the co-founder of the Center for Human Technology, Joy Buolamwin, the founder of the Algorithmic Justice League, and Oren Etzioni, the former CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, among others. The president’s visit to San Francisco extends until Wednesday.

The White House spokesperson emphasized that these experts possess a wide range of perspectives on the impact of AI on various aspects of society. They include voices who have spoken out on issues such as job displacement, the effects on children, biases and prejudices, risks associated with inadequate regulation of AI, as well as those who acknowledge the potential benefits of this technology in education and medicine, provided it is implemented with safety in mind.

The Biden administration has placed considerable focus on AI, with White House chief of staff Jeff Zients leading efforts to swiftly develop decisive actions in the field. These actions are expected to be announced in the upcoming weeks. Additionally, White House principals hold discussions on AI two to three times a week, as the administration aims to secure commitments from leading AI companies in both the government and private sectors to address key challenges.

In May, President Biden and Vice President Harris held a meeting with executives from Google, Microsoft, and two other AI companies at the White House. The administration has also committed an investment of $140 million to establish seven new AI research institutes.
