X: Trump Makes a Comeback on Twitter

Former President Trump made his first post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, since January 2021. He shared an image of his mug shot after surrendering in Fulton County, Ga., on Thursday evening.

This marked Trump’s return to the social media platform after his account was suspended in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. Throughout his 2016 campaign and his tenure as president, Trump was known for his prolific use of Twitter to share jabs at political opponents and announce major decisions.

Before posting on X, Trump had already shared the mug shot on Truth Social, a platform in which he has a financial stake. He then surprised his followers by posting on X using his @realdonaldtrump handle, which had been inactive for over two years. It should be noted that there are requirements for Trump to exclusively post content on Truth Social before sharing it on other platforms.

This year, Trump’s X account was reinstated after Elon Musk acquired the platform. However, he had not utilized it until now. Trump made his X post while onboard a flight from Atlanta to New Jersey following his booking in the Fulton County Jail, where he took his first mug shot for his fourth indictment.

The image Trump shared on Truth Social features the words “Election Interference” and “Never Surrender!” alongside a link to his campaign website, which prominently requests donations.

The fundraising solicitation on his website reads, “Today, at the notoriously violent jail in Fulton County, Georgia, I was ARRESTED despite having committed NO CRIME.”

His aides also shared the post on X, as both Trump and his team aim to garner support following his fourth arrest this year on criminal charges.

Last week, Trump was hit with 13 charges related to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia. The indictment, brought forth by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, details Trump’s campaign to pressure election officials, his plot to submit false slates of electors, and his lawsuit seeking to invalidate the state’s results.
