Ongoing wildfires prompt Trudeau’s visit to B.C. province

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is currently in British Columbia to meet with individuals involved in combating the “apocalyptic” ongoing wildfires across the province.

The visit, which is listed on his public itinerary, follows the recent announcement that residents of the City of Kelowna were permitted to return home after evacuation. According to BC Wildfire, the fires in Lake Country and Kelowna are now classified as “held”, meaning they are unlikely to spread beyond their current boundaries given the current conditions.

As of Thursday night, approximately 369 wildfires continue to burn in the province, with 14 considered notable. This year has seen a record-breaking 1.76 million hectares burned as of August 23.

Trudeau recently described the wildfires in both British Columbia and the Northwest Territories as causing “apocalyptic devastation.” A state of emergency has been declared in BC, and all residents of Yellowknife, the capital of the NWT, have been ordered to evacuate due to an encroaching wildfire.
