Studios’ Latest Offer Continues to Fall Below Union Demands, Says WGA

The Writers Guild of America is preparing for another day of picketing following the release of an unsatisfactory contract offer from Hollywood studios. In response, the union emphasized the need for universal improvements in contract terms and called for continued solidarity among its members.

The current offer from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers was criticized by the WGA negotiators for containing half measures and excluding many screenwriters. While there have been some movements by the studios on issues like the use of artificial intelligence, the negotiators highlighted that there is still work to be done.

The union’s negotiating committee also expressed concern about the limitations and omissions present in the studios’ offer regarding minimum writing staff size for television. They emphasized the importance of regulating the use of writers’ work to train AI for creating new content.

Furthermore, the negotiators highlighted that the proposed compensation package based on streaming viewership data would only be available during the next contract negotiations in three years, leaving writers unaware of their projects’ performance in the meantime.

The union remained committed to direct negotiations with the companies, stating that such negotiations are essential for reaching a deal and ending the strike.

The AMPTP had claimed that their offer included a significant pay increase and increased authority for showrunners, along with protections against the use of artificial intelligence. However, the WGA’s counterclaims suggest that the offer falls short of their expectations.

The ongoing strike, which began on May 2, has disrupted production in the industry. The union, along with SAG-AFTRA actors, is urging for better terms that align with those approved by the Directors Guild of America.

Ending the strike is a priority for both the union and the studios to alleviate the hardships faced by those involved in the industry.
