World’s First 7-Minute Cancer Treatment

England is set to revolutionize cancer treatment with the introduction of a new injection that can reduce treatment times by up to 75%. The injection, called Atezolizumab, is a monoclonal antibody medication that targets a protein responsible for suppressing the immune system’s ability to attack cancer cells. According to a report by the Guardian, Atezolizumab is currently used to treat various cancers, including lung, breast, liver, and bladder cancer. Traditionally, the medication is administered through an intravenous drip, which can take up to an hour if there are difficulties in finding a vein. However, with the recent approval from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, England’s National Health Service (NHS) will soon offer a much faster injection method for Atezolizumab. According to Marius Scholtz, medical director for the pharmaceutical company Roche, the new injection will only take approximately seven minutes, compared to the current method that takes 30-60 minutes.

It is estimated that the majority of the 3,600 cancer patients in England who receive Atezolizumab each year will now receive it through this new injection method. However, patients who receive intravenous chemotherapy with Atezolizumab can continue to receive the medication through transfusion, as stated by Reuters. Studies have shown that under-the-skin injections are preferable to intravenous infusion due to reduced pain, ease of administration, and faster treatment, as reported by the Guardian. This groundbreaking treatment will not only save patients time at the hospital but also free up valuable resources in NHS chemotherapy units, according to Peter Johnson, NHS England’s national director for cancer, as highlighted in the Telegraph. Dr. Alexander Martin, a consultant oncologist at West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, expressed his excitement for the approval, stating that it will enable healthcare teams to treat more patients throughout the day.
