World Sleep Rankings: Finns Average 8 Hours of Sleep Every Night, Outpacing the Japanese by 70 Minutes – How Do Britain and the US Compare?

Finland Tops World Sleep Rankings with Average of 8 Hours per Night

In a study conducted by researchers in Korea and the UK, it has been found that only individuals living in Finland are able to achieve the recommended eight hours of sleep per night. The study monitored the sleeping habits of over 30,000 people across 11 countries through the use of smartwatches and surveys. Results revealed that the people of Japan were the least rested, with an average of less than seven hours of sleep per night.

Interestingly, the researchers also noted that individuals living in wealthier countries tend to get fewer hours of sleep. This could be attributed to longer working hours and more rigid work schedules. Additionally, the researchers discovered a link between the emphasis on individualism and sleep length. Countries that placed a higher value on being part of a group, such as Spain and Japan, tended to have later bedtimes. This could be due to family obligations that cause individuals to go to bed later.

Daniele Quercia, head of social dynamics and Nokia Bell Labs, suggests that excessive work schedules, long working hours, and late bedtimes in high-income countries, coupled with social engagement due to high collectivism, may be contributing factors to delayed bedtimes.

For individuals struggling with insomnia, it is important to make changes to sleep habits. Simple tips to improve sleep hygiene include keeping regular sleep hours, creating a restful sleep environment, engaging in regular exercise (avoiding vigorous exercise close to bedtime), not forcing sleep if unable to fall asleep, writing down worries before bed, and reducing caffeine and alcohol consumption.

It is crucial for individuals to prioritize getting sufficient sleep, as long-term sleep deprivation can lead to various health issues such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. By taking steps to improve sleep, individuals can enhance their overall well-being and quality of life.
