Queen rock band awarded Brit Billion Award for streaming success

The British rock band, which included lead singer Freddie Mercury, guitarist Sir Brian May, bassist John Deacon, and drummer Roger Taylor, has been presented with a prestigious award by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). The BPI, the record industry’s trade association, analyzed the band’s achievements and determined that their classic songs, such as Another One Bites The Dust, Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and Killer Queen, have contributed to an astounding total. The BPI also revealed that the band’s hits, including Radio Ga Ga, Under Pressure, We Are The Champions, and We Will Rock You, have received significant streaming numbers.

Brian May, who was a founding member of the band, expressed gratitude for the Brit Billion Award and thanked their loyal fans for their continued support. Drummer Roger Taylor also expressed his excitement about receiving the award and acknowledged the fans who have found enjoyment in their music. Both May and Taylor received personalized trophies in the shape of the Brits B, designed by Gaudio Awards.

The award coincides with the 50th anniversary of Queen’s debut album, released in July 1973, the same year the BPI was established. Dr. Jo Twist, BPI chief executive, praised Queen’s significant contribution to promoting British music worldwide and acknowledged their monumental achievements as recording artists. She highlighted their Greatest Hits album as the most successful album ever in the UK and celebrated their classic songs for reaching over a billion streams in the UK.

Creative industries minister John Whittingdale commended the BPI for introducing a new award that recognizes the success of British artists in the digital age. He applauded Queen for reaching this incredible milestone and acknowledged the band’s ongoing magic in entertaining millions of followers worldwide.

The Brit Billion award was officially launched in May 2023, and the first wave of artists to receive the award included global superstars such as Abba, Coldplay, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston, as well as talented artists like Anne-Marie, Ellie Goulding, George Ezra, Lewis Capaldi, Raye, Rita Ora, Sam Smith, and pioneering rap and hip-hop artists AJ Tracey and Headie One.
