A woman was arrested for filming police officers from her own front garden after refusing to put her camera down.

Emily Good, a resident of New York, found herself in handcuffs when she filmed police arresting a man just outside her home.

The 28-year-old was charged with obstructing governmental administration after she ignored an officer’s order to leave her front yard and go inside.

News of her arrest has sparked a media frenzy regarding the filming of police officers.

In Miss Good’s video, captured under the illumination of police sirens, a man can be seen being interrogated by a police officer around 10 p.m.

The man responds, “I just got out of the house, man, I’m sick, man” as he is led away in handcuffs. One of the officers then turns towards the camera and asks, “You guys need something?”

Miss Good replies, “I’m just recording what you’re doing. It’s my right.”

The officer responds, “Actually, not from the sidewalk.”

The video, which was uploaded to the internet more than a month after Miss Good’s arrest, has sparked a debate over whether she was within her rights to film or should have complied with the officer’s orders.

Rochester Police Union President Mike Mazzeo stated that the officer repeatedly felt threatened by Miss Good’s presence.

He says, “I see an officer using great restraint, maintaining composure, acting professional, clearly giving very clear and concise orders to an individual who simply didn’t comply.”

Mr. Mazzeo emphasizes the danger that police face on a daily basis and believes that her presence on her property is insignificant.

He adds, “I think she was certainly trying to engage the officers, in my opinion, and that’s what’s so dangerous because it’s a distraction to what these officers are doing.”
