Waze job cuts follow merge of ad services with Google

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has implemented job cuts at Waze, its mapping service, as part of its ongoing efforts to streamline operations and enhance efficiency in the competitive landscape of Silicon Valley.

Specifically, some roles revolving around advertising at Waze have been eliminated after the division decided to integrate Google’s advertising technology. A Google spokesperson clarified this information on Tuesday.

Explaining the situation, the spokesperson stated, “As part of this update, we have downsized positions focused on Waze Ads monetization and are offering employees support in terms of mobility resources and severance in accordance with local regulations.”

Back in December, Google announced its decision to fold Waze into its Geo organization, which already encompasses highly popular products like Google Maps and Google Earth. However, no specific figures were disclosed regarding the number of jobs affected at Waze.

Google’s cost-cutting initiatives are a response to the deceleration in demand for digital advertising, a significant revenue driver for the company in the preceding year. In January, Alphabet declared its intention to downsize its global workforce by approximately 12,000 employees, which accounted for over 6% of the total workforce. Fortunately, during the first quarter of this year, Google exceeded sales estimates due to the robust performance of advertising sales in the realm of search and the YouTube video platform.
