MANILA, Philippines—Bo Perasol has taken on a new and significant role.
Following his stint as the University of the Philippines’ men’s basketball team program director, Perasol has been appointed as the director of UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development (OASD).
“I have mixed emotions because of the magnitude of the job. Diliman alone has over 700 student-athletes and I am committed to getting to know each one of them so that I can effectively move forward not just for the present, but also for future student-athletes,” said Perasol in Filipino on Wednesday.
“Our goal is for the office to be fully equipped in catering to the needs of UP student-athletes. My responsibility now goes beyond overseeing the basketball program; it extends to all of UP’s athletic programs.”
Perasol had previously served as the head coach, leading the Fighting Maroons to the UAAP Finals in 2018, where they were swept by the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
In addition, Perasol’s role as program director of basketball helped end UP’s 36-year title drought in the UAAP in 2022. He also played a crucial role in recruiting talents like Carl Tamayo, Zavier Lucero, Malick Diouf, and JD Cagulangan to the Fighting Maroons.
“I hope to see the same collaborative structure in the OASD, with the alumni, community, school administration, coaches, and players working together. These elements are critical to achieving success,” expressed Perasol.
Perasol aims to continue his previous efforts on a larger scale.
“Whatever is lacking, we will find a way to compensate because unlike other schools, everything is free in UP, so we don’t have external funding sources to rely on,” he stated.
“Of course, we always appreciate the generosity of our alumni, but we must also ensure that we have other resources. We want the new office to be self-sustaining in some way.”
