The U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Green Without Borders, a Lebanon-based organization, for allegedly disguising their support for Hezbollah under the pretext of environmentalism. The leader of the organization, Zuhair Subhi Nahla, has also been sanctioned. The sanctions come as a result of the group’s activities in southern Lebanon, near Israel, where they facilitated Hezbollah’s operations. The Treasury Department aims to expose Hezbollah’s deceptive tactics and actively support legitimate Lebanese environmental organizations. The U.S. government remains committed to pursuing Hezbollah and their support networks while safeguarding Lebanon’s natural environment.
Aug. 16 (UPI) — The U.S. Treasury Department condemned Green Without Borders for their role in supporting and aiding Hezbollah’s activities along the Blue Line, a demarcation between Lebanon and Israel. The organization has been operating since 2013 and has strategically positioned its outposts in southern Lebanon, which serve as cover for Hezbollah’s clandestine warehouses and munitions storage tunnels. The Treasury Department also revealed that Zuhair Subhi Nahla, despite denying his affiliation with Hezbollah, has acknowledged his association with the group.
It should be noted that United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon have been impeded by the presence of Green Without Borders’ outposts, hindering their mandate to maintain peace and security in the region.
Hezbollah, a Shiite militant group formed with Iran’s assistance in the 1980s, has been engaged in hostilities with Israel and has been designated as a terrorist organization by the U.S. State Department since 1997.
