Unveiling the World’s Top 50 Hotels: Surprisingly, No Irish Stays Included!

The World’s 50 Best Hotels: A Creative and Unique List

The World’s 50 Best Hotels list follows a similar template to its renowned restaurant and bars lists. This year, the list is dominated by Passalacqua, a charming 24-room hotel located in Moltrasio, Italy. The hotel, which opened its doors in June 2022 after an extensive restoration of its 18th-century building, has a rich history of hosting illustrious guests including Napoleon and Winston Churchill. Its popularity among the elite jet set can be attributed to charismatic owners Paolo, Antonella, and Valentina De Santis, who already had a loyal following as the owners of the beloved Grand Hotel Tremezzo in Lake Como.

Starting at around €1,100 per night in November, the rates at Passalacqua rise significantly during peak season. Following closely behind Passalacqua are a series of iconic Asian stays, such as Rosewood Hong Kong, Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Praya River, The Upper House in Hong Kong, and Aman Tokyo. Marrakesh’s La Mamounia, a triumph for a city recovering from a devastating earthquake, is also among the top-ranked hotels.

Surprisingly, this is the first time that no Irish hotels or resorts have made it onto the list. Nevertheless, Europe claims a majority share with 21 of the 50 slots occupied by properties on the continent. The United States had only two entries, Aman and Equinox, while Africa and South America had one entry each. Independent hotels outperformed branded entities, with Marriott and Hilton failing to secure a spot, while Aman and Four Seasons both received four nods. Lesser-known brands such as Maybourne Hotel Group and Oetker Collection also found success with three entries each.

The rankings are determined by a panel of 580 jurors assigned by regional division heads called academy chairs. These jurors have firsthand experience as hoteliers, staff, travel agents, journalists, or simply due to their extensive travels. The jurors submit votes for their top seven hotels in order of preference from their stays within the last 24 months. Despite concerns about the ongoing effects of the pandemic on the rankings, William Drew, director of content at William Reed, the company behind the lists, remains confident in the system.

Comparing hotels with different experiences, styles, and locations can be complex, but it is precisely this diversity that makes the list interesting. Drew explains that the goal is to encourage discussion and celebrate the unique qualities that make each hotel great. The World’s 50 Best Hotels list is a testament to the ever-evolving and dynamic nature of the hospitality industry.
