Unveiling the Controversy: ‘Cover-Up’ Accusations Surrounding the Tragic Gym Mat Death of Kendrick Johnson

  • The parents of Kendrick Johnson are suing Georgia authorities for $1 billion.
  • They allege in the lawsuit their son’s death was not a freak accident, and was instead covered up.
  • The teen was found dead, inside a rolled-up gym mat, in 2013.

The parents of a teenager who tragically passed away a decade ago are taking legal action against multiple Georgia law enforcement agencies. They believe that their son’s death was not a mere accident but a deliberate act that has been concealed by the authorities. The body of Kendrick Johnson, a 17-year-old also known as KJ, was discovered in 2013 inside a rolled-up wrestling mat in his high school’s gymnasium. The parents are seeking justice and $1 billion in damages from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.

Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office

The prevailing explanation given by Georgia law enforcement officials is that KJ was trying to retrieve his shoes, which were stuck near the top of the rolled-up mat. As he reached for them, he accidentally fell into the mat and became trapped. However, the parents dispute this theory, pointing out several inconsistencies. They highlight the fact that only one shoe was found next to their son’s body, and neither the shoe nor the inside of the mat had any blood on them, which contradicts the presence of a “pool of blood” near the body. Furthermore, they argue that the mat’s opening was too narrow for KJ to have fallen into it, as his shoulder width exceeded the width of the opening.

Johnson’s parents claim their son died from blunt-force trauma

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI have been accused of mishandling the investigation into KJ’s death. The lawsuit mentions a coroner’s report that criticized the investigative climate as “very poor” and raised concerns about the mishandling of the body and the refusal of law enforcement to cooperate. On the other hand, a separate report from a regional crime lab found no signs of blunt-force trauma on Johnson’s body. The GBI conducted an autopsy and attributed the cause of death to positional asphyxiation. However, the Johnsons spent their own money to exhume their son’s body for an independent autopsy, which concluded that he died from blunt-force trauma.

The lawsuit alleges that the sheriff’s office and the GBI manipulated official documents to present a false narrative and cause of death for Kendrick Johnson. The Johnsons are seeking justice and hope to shed light on the truth behind their son’s tragic passing.
