Renowned tenor Stephen Gould, known for his extraordinary performances, has passed away at the age of 61. Gould’s agent, Stephanie Ammann, confirmed his death in Virginia on Tuesday, although further details have not been revealed.
Earlier this year, Gould withdrew from the prestigious Bayreuth Festival in Germany, where he was set to take on the lead roles in “Tannhäuser,” “Tristan und Isolde,” and “Götterdämmerung.”

Gould revealed his cancer diagnosis after the conclusion of the Bayreuth Festival, as he did not want it to overshadow the festival’s success.
Widely celebrated for his portrayal of heroic roles, Gould captivated audiences in prestigious opera houses across the globe. His breakthrough came in 2006 when he debuted in Richard Wagner’s monumental “Ring” cycle at the Bayreuth Festival, earning critical acclaim for his performances.

The Associated Press described his performance as Siegfried in the third “Ring” show as “naturally engaging, athletic, and youthful, befitting the teenage hero.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, biliary tract cancer often remains asymptomatic during the initial stages and is usually discovered incidentally through routine medical examinations or unrelated imaging tests.
He is survived by his sister.
