An Alberta woman who fought against COVID vaccine requirements for organ transplants has passed away.
The former lawyer for Sheila Annette Lewis confirmed her death on Friday.
“Ms. Lewis was a dedicated advocate for personal rights and freedoms,” said Allison Pejovic, who remained in contact with Lewis’s son.
Lewis was diagnosed with a terminal disease in 2018 and was informed that she required an organ transplant to survive.
In 2020, she was placed on a transplant waitlist but was later told that she needed to receive the COVID-19 vaccine before being eligible.
Lewis refused to take the vaccine on the grounds of conscience and argued that the requirement violated her Charter rights.
An Alberta court dismissed her case, stating that the Charter did not apply to clinical treatment decisions. The Supreme Court also declined to hear her appeal.
