In 2009, Matthew Perry was captured reading at the stage show ‘Celebrity Autobiography: In Their Own Words’ at Los Angeles. In an enigmatic October 22nd Instagram post, his last public words were, “I’m Mattman,” accompanied by a photo of the Friends superstar relaxing in a hot tub with the lights of the Pacific Palisades glistening on the horizon. Just six days later, Perry was found unresponsive in the same hot tub and was soon after pronounced dead at age 53. And the mystery of “Mattman” — Perry’s “Rosebud” — would only deepen. Was it code? An inside joke? TikTok conspiracy theorists questioned if it was a cry for help.
In 2017, he purchased the “mansion in the sky” complete with a “bat cave” to store his Caped Crusader memorabilia, solidifying his obsession with Batman. Perry was convinced that Mattman was going to be his comeback vehicle, with plans of developing it into a production at one point.
During his last acting job in 2020 in the movie Don’t Look Up, he displayed obvious signs of illness and was ultimately removed from the film. Although he had hoped the role in Don’t Look Up might set Perry back on track, Perry had no interest in that angle. As for Don’t Look Up, Perry finished one scene in Boston before flying to a rehab center in Switzerland.
In general, Matthew Perry’s life and story was tragic. He died from drug addiction at the tender age of 53 – a promising life gone too soon. Unfortunately, his talent and passion could not protect him.
