In order for the donation to proceed, the US has stipulated that Ukrainian pilots must first undergo training on the jets, which will take several months. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte did not provide a specific number, but mentioned that the Netherlands currently possesses 42 F-16s and pilot training will commence soon. Zelensky commended the Netherlands for being the first nation to agree to supply the aircraft, expressing his gratitude in a post on Telegram. The F-16s will also enhance Ukraine’s air defenses against Russian missile attacks, according to the New York Times.
Rutte acknowledged that the jets would not immediately provide assistance, stating that their objective is to become active and operational as soon as possible. Zelensky also traveled to Denmark, the second donor of these American-made fighters, to meet with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and the royal family. In addition, he visited Sweden over the weekend to advocate for the Gripen fighter jets manufactured in that country.
