Ukraine has revealed that the recent mass drone attack on multiple Russian regions originated from within Russian territory. The attack targeted at least six regions, causing significant damage. Ukrainian Defense Ministry confirmed the attack, with photographic evidence supporting their claim.

Sept. 1 (UPI) — Ukraine’s Defense Ministry stated that the attack drones, which successfully destroyed two Russian military transport jets and damaged two others at an airfield in Pskov, were launched from Russian territory.

The Chief of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, admitted that Ukraine carried out the attack operations from within Russia. However, he did not provide specific details about the number of drones used or the exact locations of the operations.

“We are working from the territory of Russia,” said Budanov when asked about the attack. The drones were strategically targeting the fuel tanks and a crucial section of the wing spar connecting the wings to the fuselage of the aircraft.

It is still unclear whether Ukrainian intelligence operatives were physically present in Russia or if they collaborated with sympathetic Russians in conducting the operations remotely from Ukraine.

This clarification from Budanov eliminates the confusion surrounding the initial speculation that the aircraft were hit by a long-range missile. This speculation arose when President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned the development of a home-grown long-range weapon in a social media post, praising its effectiveness.

Adding to the details, Zelensky wrote on Telegram, “Ministry of Strategic Industries reported on own production. Successful use of our long-range weapons: the target was hit at a distance of 434 miles.” Pskov, the location of the attack, is approximately 434 miles away from the Ukrainian border.

The attack extended beyond Pskov, as at least five other Russian regions, including Moscow, Oryol, Ryazan, and Kaluga, were targeted in a massive UAV offensive overnight. This attack is considered the largest drone assault on Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Authorities claimed to have intercepted most of the drones, and fortunately, there were no reported injuries. Nevertheless, the attacks disrupted travel plans, leading to the temporary suspension of flights at several airports, including four in Moscow.

As a result of the attack, Pskov airport remains closed, with all flights suspended to assess the possible damage caused to the runway, according to the regional governor Mikhail Vedernikov.
