MANILA, Philippines — University of the East coach Jack Santiago is eagerly anticipating the debut of his new recruits in the UAAP Season 86 men’s basketball tournament. The host team will face the University of Santo Tomas in their opening game at Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

Despite losing key players from last season, Santiago is excited about his retooled roster, which includes new additions Devin Fikes and Jack Cruz-Dumont alongside returning players Noy Remogat and Abdul Sawat.

“We are extremely excited because all our recruited players are eligible to play,” said Santiago. “However, we cannot underestimate the other teams as they have also recruited good players and have prepared well during the off-season. As this year’s host, we will do our best to give our school and the community a great season.”

The Red Warriors bid farewell to Nikko and Kyle Paranada, Gani Stevens, and PBA rookie Luis Villegas.

Despite the departures, Santiago, now in his third season as coach, has confidence in his current players who are determined to improve upon last year’s sixth-place finish with a 5-9 record.

“I see that my players are even more motivated than last year. Hopefully, we will have a successful season,” Santiago said. “Although we lost many players from last season, we have filled those gaps with new recruits. We are implementing several changes to maximize the potential of our new players, but ultimately, teamwork is our main focus.”

The Red Warriors will face a tough challenge against the Growling Tigers, who have welcomed back veteran coach Pido Jarencio after a 10-year absence, as part of their hosting festivities.
