U.S. Military Reports Russian Fighter Jet Causes Damage to American Drone in Syrian Airspace

The U.S. military has accused Russia of harassing a drone over Syria. Lt. Gen. Alex Grynkewich, the head of U.S. Air Forces Central, stated that a Russian fighter jet flew dangerously close to a MQ-9 drone, causing severe damage with a deployed flare. The incident occurred during a defeat-ISIS mission. MQ-9 drones are unmanned, armed aircraft primarily used for intelligence collection. A video captured the Russian plane approaching and flying past the drone, with only a few meters of separation. The Russian jet dropped flares, one of which struck the drone and damaged its propeller. Fortunately, the drone was able to safely return to its home base. This incident is not the first of its kind, as similar instances have been reported in July. The U.S. military calls on Russian forces to cease this reckless and unprofessional behavior, which hinders the mission against ISIS.
