Oct. 18 (UPI) — Forecasters announced the formation of Tropical Storm Tammy in the Atlantic Ocean, located east of the Windward Islands, on Wednesday.

According to the 5 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center, the storm is currently situated 625 miles east of the islands and is moving west at a speed of 23 mph. The system has sustained winds of 40 mph.

The reach of tropical storm winds extends up to 140 miles from the center of the storm, as confirmed by NHC officials.

Barbados, Dominica, Martinique, and Guadeloupe are all under a tropical storm watch, indicating a possibility of experiencing tropical storm conditions within the next 48 hours.

Forecasters predict that the storm’s forward motion will slow down until Thursday, with a west-northwest turn expected on Thursday night.

Following this, the system is projected to shift towards the northwest on Friday night or Saturday. Forecasters anticipate the storm to pass near or over the Leeward Islands during Friday and Saturday.

The forecast indicates that Tammy will bring rainfall ranging from 3 to 6 inches by Saturday night, with some areas potentially experiencing up to 10 inches. The British and U.S. Virgin Islands could expect a maximum rainfall total of approximately 4 inches. Eastern Puerto Rico may also receive a similar amount of rainfall.
