Tragic Wedding Blaze: 113 Lives Lost as Fireworks Ignite Catastrophe

In a tragic incident, over 100 people have lost their lives in Iraq after a devastating fire broke out during a wedding ceremony. Health officials in Nineveh, the province where the wedding occurred, have reported a death toll of 113 or 114. The BBC reports that another 150 individuals sustained injuries. The wedding, which was taking place at an events hall, was attended by hundreds of people when the fire erupted. Authorities have cautioned that the number of casualties may increase, according to the Guardian.

A survivor of the fire recounts, “We saw the fire pulsating, coming out of the hall. Those who managed got out and those who didn’t got stuck.” Reuters reports that Iraq’s prime minister has instructed officials to mobilize all efforts to provide relief to those affected by the incident. At a nearby hospital, people were queuing up to donate blood for the victims.

According to an Iraqi official, the use of highly flammable and cheap building materials that collapse rapidly during a fire contributed to the tragedy. Parts of the hall, including the ceiling, collapsed within minutes. Disturbing footage from the scene shows firefighters searching for survivors amidst the charred rubble. (Read more Iraq stories.)
