Tories express discontent over Standard’s apparent mockery of their London mayoralty selection

Councillor Susan Hall, the chosen Conservative Party candidate for the Mayor of London election in 2024, recently spoke at the Battle of Britain Bunker in Uxbridge, West London. However, the Conservatives have expressed their dissatisfaction with the front page coverage of this event in the Evening Standard.

Deputy party chairman Nickie Aiken criticized the newspaper for its “contemptible” treatment of Susan Hall, suggesting that it displayed a “whiff of misogyny.” A full-page picture of Hall was accompanied by the headline “And the winner is?”, which implied that current Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan was likely to win a third term.

Party chairman Greg Hands also expressed disappointment with the coverage and supported Aiken’s complaint to Standard editor Dylan Jones. Aiken particularly took issue with the choice of photo, claiming that Hall was coerced by the Standard photographer to pose with her arms in the air, despite her initial reluctance. Aiken argued that malicious intent was behind the selection of this particular image, especially considering that other photos were available from the PA news agency.

Aiken concluded her letter by demanding a prompt response and explanation from the editor. Dylan Jones, who took over the position last month after leading British GQ men’s lifestyle magazine, now faces the task of addressing these concerns raised by the Conservative Party.
