Closing Arguments Reached in UK Trial of Kevin Spacey

LONDON (AP) – Prosecutor Christine Agnew argued in her closing statement on Wednesday that the similarities in the accounts of Kevin Spacey’s accusers were not a coincidence but rather a result of Spacey’s trademark move. She stated that the men felt “small, diminished and worthless” after their interactions with the Hollywood star. Agnew emphasized that Spacey was able to get away with his assaults for years due to his celebrity status and the belief that his victims would not be believed or that authorities would not take action against him.
Agnew highlighted how the #MeToo movement in 2017 brought attention to the allegations against Spacey and led the four men to independently complain to authorities. The incidents, which occurred between 2001 and 2013, escalated from unwanted touching to aggressive crotch-grabbing and even performing oral sex on an unconscious man.

Spacey, who is facing nine charges including sexual assault and indecent assault, has pleaded not guilty. In his defense, he denied sexually assaulting three men and downplayed accusations of crotch-grabbing as a “clumsy pass.” He dismissed allegations of racially insensitive remarks and violently grabbing a man’s private parts as “pure fantasy.”

The defense has questioned the credibility of the accusers, suggesting their motives are financial gain. Two of the men have filed lawsuits against Spacey, while another attempted to settle the criminal case through Spacey’s website.

Despite Spacey presenting photos and testimonies from supporters, Agnew urged the jury not to be distracted by the “glitter” and emphasized that Spacey’s kindness to some did not excuse his alleged cruelty behind closed doors.

The defense will present its closing arguments on Thursday in Southwark Crown Court in London.
