‘Monstrous’ Label Defied: Mother’s Laser Treatment Astonishingly Transforms Baby’s Port Wine Birthmark

A mother who was criticized for treating her five-month-old son’s port wine birthmark with laser therapy has shared a heartwarming update on his progress. Brooke Atkins from Gold Coast recently posted a video of her now 18-month-old son, Kingsley, celebrating a whole month without a seizure. This is a significant achievement for Kingsley, as he has been experiencing seizures since September of last year. Atkins acknowledged that this seizure-free period won’t last forever but expressed her joy in celebrating the small victories.

Kingsley was born in January last year with a large port wine birthmark on half of his face. Concerned about the potential complications associated with the birthmark, Atkins and her partner, Kewene Wallace, decided to pursue laser treatment for their son. While port wine birthmarks are typically harmless, when they appear on the face, as in 65% of cases, they can be linked to glaucoma and Sturge Weber Syndrome. These conditions can lead to vision problems, headaches, impaired brain function, and seizures.

Atkins explained that the only effective treatment for a port wine stain is laser therapy, specifically a Pulsed Dye Laser. The purpose of the laser treatment is not to completely remove the birthmark but rather to maintain the health of the skin and prevent further damage. Kingsley’s birthmark progressively darkened throughout his treatment but has now almost completely vanished. At 18 months old, he is at a significantly lower risk of future complications.

Atkins and Wallace faced criticism online for their decision to pursue laser treatment for their son. Some accused them of prioritizing appearance over Kingsley’s well-being. However, many others expressed their support and gratitude for sharing their story. They recognized the difficult decision that Atkins and Wallace made and commended them for doing what they believed was best for their child. Ultimately, Atkins is grateful that they decided to undergo the treatment and is happy with the positive outcome.
