TikTok Enlists Former Disney Executive Zenia Mucha

TikTok has hired Zenia Mucha, former communications chief for Disney, as its new Chief Brand and Communications Officer. This move comes as the Chinese-owned social media platform faces political pressure to ban the app. In a companywide memo, TikTok CEO Shou Chew announced that Mucha will focus on advancing the strategic vision of the brand and advising key businesses. Mucha, who worked at Disney for over two decades, was known for her fierce dedication to the company and her leadership of a team of over 500 employees. She also founded the Disney fan club D23, which gained over 1 million active members. In 2021, Mucha decided not to renew her contract with Disney, which paid her $4.9 million per year. After leaving Disney, she formed her own communications consultancy company, ZM Strategies. Last year, TikTok turned to Mucha for assistance in fighting a potential US ban, with concerns that the app was being used by China for spying purposes. Mucha was reportedly brought in to coach CEO Chew before his appearance before Congress. This hiring is part of a larger executive shakeup at TikTok, with Chief of Staff Adam Presser becoming the brand’s Head of Operations and COO V. Pappas resigning after five years with the company. TikTok, which has over 150 million users in the US, has faced scrutiny from US officials regarding Chinese government influence over the platform. The app has been banned in Montana starting from January 1, 2024, due to concerns about this potential influence.
