Ban on Abortion Pill in Wyoming Blocked

Wyoming’s attempt to ban abortion pills has been halted by a judge, ensuring their legality in the state for the time being. Teton County Judge Melissa Owens ruled that the ban cannot take effect on July 1 as planned, as attorneys for the state failed to demonstrate that it would not harm the plaintiffs in the ongoing lawsuit. Wyoming passed the first-in-the-nation law specifically targeting abortion pills in March, prompting two nonprofit organizations and four women to file a lawsuit challenging the ban. In addition to this case, the plaintiffs are also suing to stop a new, almost total ban on abortion in the state. Both of these laws were enacted in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade last year, leaving millions of women and teenagers facing stricter controls or total bans on abortion. Judge Owens has combined the two Wyoming lawsuits into one case, and she previously suspended the state’s general abortion ban shortly after it went into effect. The new abortion laws in Wyoming do provide exceptions in cases where the pregnant woman’s life is at risk or for instances of reported rape or incest. Prior to Wyoming’s law, no state had specifically outlawed abortion pills, although 13 states had implemented blanket abortion bans that also restricted access to medical abortions. Despite the state’s commitment to defend the new laws, opponents argue that they infringe on women’s fundamental rights.
