Countless smart meters rendered useless soon after botched implementation

Households are set to face ongoing challenges with smart meter installations as technicians return to fit new meters that can connect with 4G networks. The costs of upgrading the network infrastructure are likely to be passed on to consumers, adding to their financial burden.

As per the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, by the end of 2022, there were 15.1 million first-generation meters and 14.8 million second-generation meters installed in British homes. With the government’s initial goal of installing a smart meter in every home by 2020, suppliers are now tasked with bringing approximately 30 million devices online for 4G connectivity.

Gillian Cooper, the head of energy policy at Citizens Advice, emphasized the potential benefits that smart meters can bring to consumers and their role in building a sustainable energy system for the future. However, she also noted that upgrading and replacing the hardware as technology advances needs to be done in a cost-effective manner to prevent excessive burden on consumers.

Cooper further highlighted the advantages of smart meters, including more accurate billing for all consumers and improved support targeting for those in need. She suggested that the initial rollout should prioritize households with older prepayment meters, who stand to benefit the most from the installation of smart meters.
