  • Robinson started his journey in Peru in July and had hoped to reach Australia by December.
  • Unfortunately, his ship capsized 100 miles off the coast of Vanuatu on Thursday during the final leg of his trip.

Tom Robinson, 24, had dreams of becoming the youngest person to row across the Pacific Ocean. However, his aspirations were dashed when his boat capsized, as reported by the BBC.

During the final leg of his 15-month journey across the globe, Robinson was rescued by a cruise ship after his boat overturned, according to the BBC.

Robinson’s distress beacon alerted his dad that something was wrong. According to Robinson’s website, the incident was triggered by an “unexpectedly large wave” that flooded the cabin through the ship’s main hatch.

Robinson was found 100 miles off the coast of Vanuatu, a country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. He was treated for sunburn and dehydration but is otherwise in good health, according to the BBC.

Robinson embarked on his journey in July 2022, departing from Peru. His goal was to reach Cairns, Australia, by December.

In a post on Robinson’s website, gratitude was expressed to the authorities and the crew of the Pacific Explorer cruise ship for their roles in his rescue.

Robinson’s ship, named Maiwar, was built in 2021 and relied on solar power for lighting. However, it lacked luxuries like autopilot or music.

This incident follows a similar story in which an Australian sailor and his dog were stranded for two months in the Pacific Ocean before being rescued by a tuna trawler.

Overall, Robinson’s adventure serves as a reminder of the challenges and risks involved in attempting to conquer the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
