Cory Booker’s Safe Departure from Israel After Unexpected Hamas Attack in Gaza

Hamas Militants Launch Complex and Coordinated Attack on Israel

02:23 Washington — According to his spokesperson, Senator Cory Booker safely departed Israel on Sunday after Hamas militants launched a surprise attack against the country. Booker and his staff were in Jerusalem when Hamas began carrying out its large-scale offensive against Israel and took shelter to ensure their safety, said his spokesperson, Maya Krishna-Rogers, in a statement Sunday afternoon.

“We are grateful that Senator Booker and our colleagues were able to safely depart Israel earlier today,” she added. Booker, who is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, arrived in Israel on Friday for a series of meetings before the regional economic integration summit in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, which he was scheduled to attend, according to his office.

“I unequivocally condemn the horrific acts of violence, kidnapping, and terror targeting Israeli families, children, and other civilians in towns and cities across Israel. I stand in solidarity with the people of Israel and the families who have lost loved ones,” Booker wrote on social media on Saturday.

The attack has resulted in hundreds of casualties and thousands more injured. According to Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Herzog, Americans are believed to have been taken hostage by the Hamas militants, although specific details are not yet available. In response, Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the U.S. has not yet confirmed reports of American deaths or hostages.

“We have received reports that several Americans are among the deceased. We are actively working to verify these reports. Likewise, we are investigating the accuracy of reports regarding Americans being held hostage,” Blinken explained during an interview on “Face the Nation” on Sunday.

As a result of the conflict, several U.S.-based airlines have temporarily suspended flights to and from the international airport near Tel Aviv.
