This Particular Site, Infamous for Crashes, Claims the Lives of Dozens

A truck collided with multiple vehicles and market traders in western Kenya, resulting in numerous fatalities, according to the police. The accident occurred on Friday evening in an area notorious for vehicle crashes near Londiani, a town in the Rift Valley region approximately 125 miles northwest of Nairobi. The officers on the scene have reported 51 fatalities, but it is believed that more individuals may be trapped in the wreckage, as confirmed by Rift Valley police commander Tom Odero to the AP. The Kenya Red Cross Society has called on Kenyans to donate blood as 32 injured individuals have been hospitalized.

The rescue efforts have been hindered by heavy rainfall, and there are still individuals trapped in the damaged vehicles, according to the Kenya Red Cross Society. Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen visited the site on Saturday morning and announced that the government will relocate markets away from the highways to prevent similar accidents in the future. President William Ruto expressed his condolences to the grieving families and described the accident as “distressing,” emphasizing the need for motorists to exercise extreme caution.

Witnesses quoted by local media stated that the truck veered off the main highway, colliding with multiple vehicles and pedestrians. Disturbing photos were shared by witnesses, depicting the mangled wreckage of the vehicles. The police had previously announced that rescue operations would continue throughout the night. The Kenyan Red Cross Society has established stations at hospitals for individuals to report missing loved ones, and they are also providing psychological support to those affected.
