The Varying Perspectives of Children Today Regarding Alcohol

According to a recent Gallup poll, there is a growing belief among Americans that moderate drinking is unhealthy. Out of the 1,015 adults surveyed across the US in July, 39% stated that consuming one to two drinks per day is bad for one’s health, compared to 28% in 2018. The increase in this belief is mainly driven by millennials and Generation Z, with a staggering 52% of young Americans aged 18 to 34 expressing the view that moderate drinking is unhealthy, up from 34% in 2018. This 18-point increase is the highest among any age group. Even among adults aged 35 to 54, 39% now agree that moderate drinking is unhealthy, which is a 13% increase from 2018.

However, there was no significant change among adults who are 55 and older, with 29% still believing that moderate drinking is bad for one’s health. This poll comes after the World Health Organization’s warning that no level of alcohol consumption is safe. It reveals that fewer Americans now perceive moderate drinking as beneficial or harmless. Only 50% of those polled believe it has no impact on health, down from 55% in 2018. Additionally, only 10% think it is good for one’s health, down from 16%. The poll also highlights that 41% of women consider moderate drinking harmful, compared to 35% of men, and 30% of respondents believe alcohol consumption of any kind is “very harmful.” Overall, Americans view alcohol as less harmful than tobacco but more harmful than marijuana.
