CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures have appointed Wendy McMahon as their president and CEO.

Wendy McMahon has been appointed as the President and CEO of CBS News and Stations and CBS Media Ventures, expanding her role within the company. The announcement was made today by George Cheeks, the President and CEO of CBS, to whom McMahon reports.

In her newly created position, McMahon will now oversee all of CBS News’ broadcast and streaming operations, as well as 27 local television stations in major U.S. markets, 14 local news streaming channels, and CBS Media Ventures’ highly-rated first-run syndication programming. Additionally, she will be responsible for content licensing to television stations and the division’s national advertising sales business.

Under McMahon’s leadership, programming will include CBS News’ daily and weekly news broadcasts such as “60 Minutes,” “Face the Nation,” “CBS Mornings,” “CBS Saturday Mornings,” “CBS News Sunday Morning,” “48 Hours,” and “CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell.”

Furthermore, as the head of CBS Media Ventures, McMahon will oversee popular entertainment series like “Jeopardy!,” “Wheel of Fortune,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “Inside Edition,” and “The Drew Barrymore Show.” She will also be in charge of CBS Radio, CBS Newspath, and CBS’ national and local streaming news services.

Previously, McMahon shared oversight of CBS News and Stations with Neeraj Khemlani. Khemlani recently announced plans for a multiplatform first-look deal with CBS to develop content, including documentaries, scripted series, and books for Simon & Schuster. Additionally, Steven LoCascio, the president of CBS Media Ventures, has announced his retirement at the end of his current contract.

Since her appointment as President and Co-Head of CBS News and Stations in May 2021, McMahon has worked alongside Khemlani to optimize CBS’ journalistic resources across national and local platforms, with a focus on strengthening streaming capabilities.

During her time overseeing Stations, McMahon has successfully transformed the local business by improving the quality of content, community service, and workplace culture. This has led to stronger competitive positions across platforms, with 11 out of 13 broadcast stations now ranking #1 or #2 in late local news. The viewership of CBS Stations’ local streaming channels has also increased by 61% year-over-year in 2023.

McMahon has also expanded local news coverage in various markets, including the launch of a seven-hour morning news franchise in Los Angeles and the establishment of the “newsroom of the future” at WWJ-TV, the CBS-owned station in Detroit. Additionally, she has created the CBS Local News Innovation Lab, which focuses on data-driven investigations and solutions-oriented journalism for local stations.

Cheeks praised McMahon’s leadership, stating that she brings innovation and forward momentum to every aspect of her work. McMahon expressed her gratitude for being entrusted with leading CBS News and CBS Media Ventures and emphasized her commitment to supporting journalists during this pivotal moment for the profession.

Overall, McMahon’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for CBS News and Stations, as well as CBS Media Ventures, as they continue to deliver top-notch journalism and productions to their dedicated viewers.
