The Hill: Ecuadorian Presidential Candidate Murdered

In a tragic incident, Fernando Villavicencio, the Ecuadorian presidential candidate for the Build Ecuador Movement, was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman during a campaign rally in Quito, the country’s capital. The news was confirmed by Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso in a social media post.

The 59-year-old Villavicencio was one of the eight presidential candidates who were competing in the upcoming election scheduled for August 20. Multiple reports from reputable outlets like Al Jazeera, The New York Times, and ABC News have covered the news of Villavicencio’s untimely demise.

President Lasso expressed his determination in bringing the perpetrators of this crime to justice, stating that “the full weight of the law is going to fall on them.” He also announced that a Security Cabinet meeting would take place in the government palace in Quito, where top leaders, including those from the National Electoral Council, National Court of Justice, and the state’s attorney general, would be in attendance.
