Northwestern Takes Apart T-Shirts Showing Support for Dismissed Coach

Northwestern University’s athletic director, Derrick Gragg, expressed his strong disappointment on Wednesday towards the football team staff members who chose to wear T-shirts with an inappropriate and offensive message. The shirts read “Cats against the world” with the number 51, symbolizing former head coach Pat Fitzgerald’s number when he played for the school. Fitzgerald was recently fired after allegations of hazing surfaced, which the school is currently investigating (Yahoo Sports).

In a statement, Gragg emphasized that hazing has no place at Northwestern and condemned the shirts as inappropriate, offensive, and tone deaf. He also pledged to investigate and address the hazing accusations, which have also been reported in other Northwestern teams. However, it is unclear whether the staff members have been instructed to stop wearing the shirts (USA Today).

Northwestern University is currently facing lawsuits filed by eight former football players. Steve Levin, who is handling these suits with attorney Ben Crump, criticized the university and its football program for not taking the hazing issue seriously. Meanwhile, David Braun, the team’s interim head coach, stated at a news conference that while he does not want to censor anyone’s speech, he has the authority to prohibit the shirts at the private school (WGN).

Overall, the incident has raised concerns about the university’s response to hazing and whether it is doing enough to address the problem.
