According to a KFF Health poll, nearly half of adults express interest in using a safe and effective prescription weight loss drug. This includes a significant percentage of those currently attempting to lose weight.

Despite the significant impact of these medications on the treatment of obesity, there are financial implications. Axios explains that a debate has arisen regarding the extended use of these drugs, driven by insurers and healthcare professionals.

Understanding Ozempic

The main component in Ozempic and Wegovy, known as Semaglutide, is known for its weight loss benefits. However, these effects are only maintained through consistent, active usage. Discontinuing regular Semaglutide treatment usually leads to regained weight.

“Semaglutide works by increasing the body’s level of the hormone glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1). This hormone stimulates insulin release, leading to lower blood sugar levels and prolonged feelings of fullness,” reports Verywell Health.

While the FDA does not approve Ozempic for weight loss, U.C. Davis Health mentions that Semaglutide, the active compound in Ozempic, is approved for weight loss and marketed as Wegovy.

“Wegovy, approved by the FDA for treating overweight and obesity, contains a higher dose of Semaglutide (2.4 mg) than Ozempic and was specifically developed for this purpose,” Dr. Rekha Kumar, a New York City-based endocrinologist, told Healthline.

The Effects of Stopping Ozempic

Due to high demand, rising costs, and limited insurance coverage, many individuals have been forced to discontinue Ozempic injections.

“When you stop using Ozempic, the drug’s mechanisms that aid blood sugar control and weight loss cease. Health issues like Type 2 diabetes or heart disease can worsen, increasing the risk of serious events such as heart attacks or strokes,” according to Drugs.com.
