The £95 investment that can save you more on your energy bill than double glazing

When it comes to retaining heat in our homes, many people think of double glazing, loft insulation, and cladding as the go-to options. However, a new study has found a more efficient and affordable solution for cutting energy bills during the winter season.

The Government’s “spend-to-save” guide to energy-efficient home improvement suggests that double glazing saves up to £235 per year. However, installing double glazing can be a costly endeavor, running into thousands of pounds. For instance, fitting ten windows with A++ double glazing can cost approximately £6,400, as estimated by The Eco Experts.

But what if there was a cheaper alternative for windows that offered even greater energy savings and cost savings? According to The Eco Experts, high-quality thermal curtains, which cost around £95 on average, can reduce the heating bills of an average three-bedroom household by £327 annually.

When the Government’s energy price guarantee increases to £3,000 in April, thermal curtains can save homeowners even more money, averaging £392 per year. This represents almost a quarter of the average home’s energy bills.

In comparison, double glazing, with an average cost of £640 per window, only reduces annual energy costs by 17.5%.

Josh Jackman from The Eco Experts explains how thermal curtains work: “These curtains are made with high-density foam, similar to what you find in most sofas. This foam blocks heat from escaping during winter or entering during summer. Additionally, they are lined with insulating layers, coated with reflective material, and often come with a magnetic strip along the edges to ensure a tight seal against the wall. Together, these features help maintain a stable temperature in your home.”

According to the Energy Saving Trust, thermal curtains should be positioned between the edge of the windowsill and above radiators. Blocking radiators could prevent heat from entering the room.

Mr. Jackman acknowledges the value of double glazing for homeowners: “Although it is unlikely that you will recoup your investment, having double glazing is still a good idea for most homeowners. If you plan to sell your home, having double glazing makes it easier to attract buyers and potentially increase your asking price. Buyers generally prefer properties with double glazing, but they are aware of the cost and inconvenience of installing it themselves, so they are willing to pay more upfront to avoid the hassle.”

The Energy Saving Trust suggests investing in both double glazing and thermal curtains for optimal results: “If your home has single-glazed windows, replacing them with energy efficient double glazing is more effective for saving energy and money than using thicker curtains alone.”

However, in the battle for the most cost-effective way to prevent heat loss through windows, thermal curtains come out on top.
