Texas hit hard by Tropical Depression Harold: Flash floods, power outages, and tornado warnings reported

 —

Harold, once a tropical storm, has now weakened to a tropical depression and is moving through Texas. As it moves, it is causing flash flooding and tornado warnings, making its way towards Mexico.

Harold made landfall as a tropical storm earlier today on Padre Island, Texas. It had sustained winds of 50 mph and gusts as high as 67 mph, becoming the first storm to make landfall in the United States during the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 5 p.m. ET advisory, Harold now has sustained winds of 30 mph and all tropical storm warnings along the Texas coast have been lifted.

The center of the storm is currently located about 15 miles east of Laredo, Texas and is expected to continue moving into northern Mexico in the coming hours.

As Harold continues to track westward, heavy rain and strong winds will continue to affect parts of southern Texas and Mexico. Power outages have already been reported in Texas, affecting around 20,000 customers.

South Texas can expect to receive 3 to 5 inches of rain from Harold, with some areas potentially seeing up to 7 inches. Across Mexico, 4 to 6 inches of rain are forecasted.

The heaviest rainfall tonight is expected across northern Mexico, where up to 10 inches of rain is possible.

Along the southern Texas coast, life-threatening surf and rip currents are expected through Tuesday. There is also a possibility of tornadoes developing in the state. Several tornado warnings have already been issued by the National Weather Service.

Birds hover over Corpus Christi Bay during Tropical Storm Harold on Tuesday morning.
