August 3, 2023 (UPI) — Terrence Butler, a basketball player for Drexel University, was tragically found dead in his on-campus apartment, according to officials’ announcement on Thursday.

The cause of his death has not yet been determined.

Miguel Torres, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department, informed UPI that Butler was pronounced dead at 9:32 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday in his Philadelphia apartment. The southwest detective division initially handled the investigation, and Butler’s body was later taken to the medical examiner’s office, where the cause of death will be determined.

“On behalf of the entire Drexel community, we express our deepest condolences to Terrence’s family, friends, and teammates,” said Drexel President John Fry in a statement. “Terrence was not only a student-athlete but also actively involved in numerous activities and organizations at Drexel, and he was a beloved friend to many within the university community.”

Butler, a 6-foot-7 junior forward from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, participated in seven games last season for the Dragons.

Prior to attending Drexel, he excelled at Bishop McNamara High School, located outside of Washington, D.C. During his final year of high school, Butler was nominated for the prestigious McDonald’s All-American honor. Additionally, he received Academic Honor Roll recognition from the Coastal Athletic Association in both the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 academic years at Drexel.
